LUTHER GLENN SNOW (1892 - aft 1932) By Myron L. Newton, Jr.
Luther Glenn Snow, the third child of Louis Orlo Snow and Carrie Belle Sutton, was born in Rudd, Iowa, on July 3, 1892. Within a year or two of his birth the Snow family moved to Minnesota. The 1910 U.S. Minnesota Census enumerated Luther in Washington County, Cottage Grove Township, with his parents and siblings. Luther, at age 17, was a farm laborer, most likely on his parent’s farm. It is known from Luther’s WWI Registration Card that by 1917 he was married and resided in Pueblo, Colorado. This document, filed on June 5, 1917, gave his address as 1724 Spruce Street in Pueblo and stated that he born July 3, 1891, although census data and family records note that his birth year was 1892. The registration card noted that he was born in Rudd, Iowa, was age 25, and worked at a steel mill. Physically he had a tumor on his left shoulder, was slender and of medium height, had blue eyes and light brown hair. Luther’s wife was Pearl Lorena Welch, a native of Colorado who, according to later Social Security records, was born January 28, 1901. She was the daughter of James Harvey Welch and Henrietta “Nettie” Shepler and appeared with them in the 1910 U.S. Colorado Census for Pueblo County, Pueblo City. James was born in Indiana in 1854 and Nettie was born in Kansas in 1869. By 1920, according to that year’s Federal Census, 27 year-old Luther had returned to Cottage Grove Township in Minnesota and was farming. Pearl was age 19 and the couple had two children, Orlo (a.k.a. Lewis or Louis) age 14 months, and Lorena age 3 months. Both children were born in Colorado indicating that the Snow family had apparently returned to Minnesota in late 1919. Also living with them was Pearl’s brother, William Welch. The 1930 U.S. Census noted that the family moved back to Colorado where they lived at 1329 Orman Street in Pueblo. This census used Pearl’s middle name, Lorena, and put her age at 29. Luther was age 36, and worked as a laborer at a golf course. This census recorded Luther and Pearl’s age when they married at 24 and 15, respectively. This would place their marriage around 1916. The couple had three children; Lewis was age 11, Lorena was age ten, and Edwin was age nine.
The children of Luther Glenn Snow and Pearl Lorena Welch:
Family history noted that Luther and Pearl divorced in June 1932, in Colorado, after which Luther went to California to try and get into the movie business. No information has been found out about Luther since that date. Pearl Lorena Snow remarried first to Huston Surface, who died in 1955, and then to Matt Mance. Pearl Lorena Mance died July 2, 1972, according to online resources. Her last residence, per the Social Security Death Index, was in Pueblo, Colorado. Matt Mance died in 1974.

Lewis Orlo Glenn Snow was born in Colorado on August 15, 1918, and died on July 19, 1995. He married Beatrice (last name unknown) around 1938 and they had four children. Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Military in Denver, Colorado on September 12, 1944. According to his enlistment records he had completed two years of high school, was married, and worked as a railroad brakeman. The Social Security Death Index gave his last residence as Pueblo, Colorado. His wife may have been the Beatrice Snow who died on January 5, 2000. The SSDI noted that this person’s last residence was in Peoria, Arizona but her obituary appeared in the Pueblo (Colorado) Chieftain Newspaper.
Lorena Gay Snow was born in Colorado around 1919. The 1920 U.S. Census suggests that she may have been born in September of that year since she was three months old on the enumeration date of January 1, 1920. Lorena died at age 48 on March 13, 1968. She apparently was married to Paul J. Huskins at the time of her death since he was the owner of her grave at the Mountain View Cemetery, Pueblo, Colorado where she is buried under the name Lorena Gay Huskins. Paul is also buried in this cemetery but in a different location.
Edwin Merton Snow is covered in a separate biography.
