EUNICE NEWTON (1812 – aft 1890) By Myron L. Newton, Jr.
Eunice Newton was born on December 31, 1812 in the Town of Marcellus, Onondaga County, New York, the sixth child and third daughter born to Reuben and Eunice Manley Newton. One source indicated that her middle initial was “H”. The 1820 U. S. New York Census for that county and town accounted for her in the female, under-10 column. Around 1824 the family moved to Town of Cecilius (later renamed Mansfield) in Cattaraugus County, New York. Like the previous census, the 1830 U. S. New York Census accounted for a female child Eunice’s age living in the Reuben Newton household. Family history failed to record the whereabouts of Eunice after 1830 census. Eventually, an old family photograph album surfaced that indicated she was the wife of a person named “Bert” King. Two photos in this small album, facing each other, were labeled “Bert King” and “Eunice Newton King, Grandfather’s sister, Lyman Newton’s sister”. Both pictures were taken in a studio in Ravenna, Ohio, a small town in Portage County. The two subjects appeared to be about 50-60 years old, which would indicate that the photos were taken about mid-1860. In March 2000, a request was posted on a genealogy Internet bulletin board for the area of Ravenna, Portage County, Ohio. Soon information, citing “A Brief History of the King Family” by Sylvester M. King, confirmed her marriage to “Bert” King. Eunice married Robert W. King (one source recorded his name as “Roberton”) on April 1, 1832 in Ellicottville, Cattaraugus County, New York. Robert was the son of Robert King and Bridget Morgan, both of whom died in Charlestown, Ohio. He was born in Sanisfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts on April 28, 1804. It is unknown how Eunice and Robert became acquainted. Robert and Eunice Newton King had seven children. They are all covered in separate biographies except for Camilla, who lived only one month. She was born February 12, 1837 died March 17, 1837 and was buried in Rootstown Cemetery, Portage County, Ohio. It might be assumed that shortly after they married, Robert and Eunice moved to Lorain County, Ohio, since their first two children were reportedly born in that town of LaGrange in Lorain County. By 1837 they apparently moved eastward to Portage County, given that their remaining children were born in the town of Charleston, Portage County.
The children of Robert W. and Eunice Newton King:
The King family was recorded in the U. S. Ohio Censuses from 1840 through 1870 for Charlestown Township, Portage County, Ohio and those censuses all listed Robert’s occupation as a farmer. Over the years the family size fluctuated as children were born and older ones moved out on their own. The 1880 U. S. Ohio Census is interesting in that it indicated Eunice and Robert were no longer living together. Robert was enumerated in Portage County, Hiram Township, living with his sister and the “married” column was checked by his name. Eunice, however, was still in Charlestown Township, living with her son, Frank. The “widowed or divorced” column was checked next to her name. The elder Robert died on February 12, 1887 and was buried in the Rootstown Cemetery, Portage County, with his infant daughter, Camilla. His mother, father and step-mother are also buried in this cemetery. It is unknown when Eunice died or where she was buried. When her son, Robert, died in January of 1890, his obituary noted that his mother was still alive and residing with her son Frank in Garrettsville, Ohio. Eunice would have been 77 years of age at the time of this announcement. She has not been found in later censuses so it is possible that she died between January 1890 and the taking of the 1900 U. S. Census. The information discovered so far on Eunice Newton may tie in with the whereabouts of her brother, Nathaniel since there was a person with that name living in Portage County, Ohio and recorded in the 1850 U. S. Ohio Census. Eunice’s presence in Portage County may also have coincided with the time frame that her brother, Lyman Newton, possibly lived in the area. The Newton Bible noted that Lyman’s first son, Milton Elija, was born in the Town of Ridgeville, Lorain County, Ohio in 1834. Eunice’s first two children were born in Lorain County in 1833 and 1834.
