EDWIN MERTON SNOW (1921 - 1998)

By Myron L. Newton, Jr.

and C. Snow-Barnes

Edwin Merton Snow was the youngest child born to Luther Glenn Snow and Pearl Lorena Welch. He was born in St. Paul Park, Minnesota on April 23, 1921.

Shortly before Edwin’s birth his parents resided in Cottage Grove Township, Washington County, Minnesota where they were enumerated in the 1920 U.S. Minnesota Census. Since Edwin was not in this census it would preclude him from being born in 1919, and judging from the age of his sister, who was three months old in this census, suggests that he could not have been born before mid-1920.

The 1930 U.S. Colorado Census enumerated Edwin, his two siblings, and his parents at 1329 Orman Street in Pueblo. Edwin was enumerated at age nine, but this may have been in error. Two years later his parents divorced and his father reportedly moved to California while his mother remained in Colorado.

During the depression Ed, as he known to his family, lied about his age so he could join the Civilian Conservation Corps. The birth date he used was October 19, 1919. Further confusing his actual date of death is his Social Security Record that gives a birth date of April 21, 1919.

During the Second World War, Ed served in the Army and was discharged in the Los Angeles area where he worked for the Navy. Ed married Dorothy M. Story in Las Vegas, Nevada in June 1945, and they had one child who was born on March 10, 1946. Ed and Dorothy soon divorced and Ed returned to Pueblo, Colorado. Dorothy remarried, had four more children, and died in 2003. Upon returning to Colorado, Ed went to work for the Colorado Fuel & Iron (CF&I) where many of his cousins and uncles worked. This company was one of the main industries in the Pueblo area.

In 1948, Ed married for the second time to ______ ___ Jones. This marriage resulted in four children and ended in divorce. One child from this marriage, Tammy Kay Snow, died in 2003. Ed then married Audrey I. McKenna in June 1963. Audrey I. Snow died on September 28, 1993, and Edwin Merton Snow died on January 8, 1998. They are both buried in the Roselawn Cemetery, Pueblo, Colorado.
